Engineering definition
A situation or problem that is very severe and unpleasant.
Medical definition
Lasting a long time. Chronic diseases are in contrast to acute (abrupt, sharp, and brief) or subacute (within the interval between acute and chronic) diseases.
Confusion
Chronic in the engineering context carries a connotation of severity that does not necessarily apply to the medical definition. Both, however, have a time component.
