Engineering definition
1. The physical site to which an engineer may be called to perform design and engineering work.
2. A concept that does not require any real existence. For instance, gravitational, electric, and magnetic forces act between bodies even if they are separated by distance.
Medical definition
1. A range of specialization in knowledge, study, or occupation.
2. In embryology, the developing region within a range of modifying factors.
3. The space or range relevant to the area of assessment.
Confusion
It is conceivable that the research engineer and medical professional could have a misunderstanding around the more technical definitions of field. The use of the word is common particularly in magnetics, and this definition may overlap with that understood by a radiographer, for example. However, in most cases the definitions are mutually understood.
