The lumbar spine consists of five lumbar vertebrae that rest upon the sacrum. The vertebrae are numbered from the top down and increase in size as they approach the pelvis, in correspondence to the incumbent body weight. The joints between L-4 and L-5 and between L-5 and S-1 (lumbosacral joint) carry the most load and are the most prone to injury.
