Tibial Tuberosity

Tibial Tuberosity

Tuberosities are “bumps” where tendons and ligaments attach to bone. The tibial tuberosity is on the anterior of the proximal tibia just below the knee. Its rough surface provides an attachment point for the patellar ligament that connects the quadriceps to the patella and then to the tibia. Forces from the quadriceps femoris muscles are transferred through the suprapatellar ligament, the patella, and the patellar ligament and applied to the tibia at the tibial tuberosity. These forces are used to extend the knee.
